Homework Philosophy

The Accord School believes that there is a time and space to learn and grow- concepts, skills and awareness. Homework should support that growth, not simply add to students' workload. We do not assign homework “for the sake of assigning homework.”

At The Accord School, homework is rooted in two main purposes:

The reinforcement of classroom skills and test preparation:The four main subjects: English, math, science, and social studies assign homework based on material covered in classes that will provide low-stakes practice in order to build competency, as well as time to prepare for assessments and long term projects.

To take ownership of learning: Homework allows students to practice multiple executive functioning skills like prioritizing assignments, time management, task initiation, and organizing materials. Completing homework and returning it to class is an essential act of student responsibility and the necessary progression of students becoming more active participants in their own learning.

Homework is a skill to be practiced over time:

Students in fifth grade require different practices than students in eighth grade in order to build their homework skills. Our approach takes into account the developmental needs of students, their potential frustrations with homework, and the goal of preparing them for their future educational placements. With this in mind, Accord School students are provided with explicit lessons and daily teacher support in creating routines and habits centered on homework.

What Parents and Students Can Expect:
